Before the establishment of Chulalongkorn University, the huge piece of land was overgrown with vegetation and rain trees. Inter past, students came to review their lessons under their shade. With time, the number of the rain trees has decreased partly because of their vulnerability to diseases. Aware of this,
H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) took the initiative in encouraging the planting of new rain trees. The rain tree, one of the important university symbols, unifies the hearts and minds of all members of the Chulalongkorn community. In line with the royal example, the university initiated a plan to plant 80 rain trees to mark the 80th anniversary of Chulalongkorn University and make the rain tree a lasting symbol of the university.
